Great Wall of China, China

Great Wall of China, China

Location: Northern China, stretching from the Bohai Sea in the east to the Gobi Desert in the west
Age: Built over many dynasties, mainly between the 7th century BC and the 17th century AD

What is the Great Wall of China?
The Great Wall of China is the world’s longest man-made structure — an ancient defensive fortification that stretches for over 21,000 kilometers (13,000 miles). It winds through mountains, deserts, grasslands, and plateaus, creating an iconic symbol of China’s historical strength and ingenuity.

The Wall is not a single continuous barrier but a series of walls and watchtowers built by different Chinese dynasties to protect the northern borders from invasions by nomadic tribes and military incursions.

 Why is it famous?

  • It is one of the most ambitious architectural feats in human history.

  • The Wall is visible from space in some satellite images (although the idea that it’s easily visible to the naked eye from the Moon is a myth).

  • It’s a UNESCO World Heritage Site and one of the New Seven Wonders of the World.

  • Popular sections like Badaling, Mutianyu, and Jinshanling attract millions of tourists every year.

 Interesting Facts:
The Wall was built mainly using stone, bricks, tamped earth, wood, and other local materials.
It also has watchtowers, beacon towers, barracks, garrisons, and fortresses along its length.
Many workers — soldiers, peasants, and prisoners — built the Wall, and it’s often called “the longest cemetery on Earth” because so many died during its construction.

The Great Wall today is a breathtaking reminder of China’s ancient civilization and a bucket-list destination for travelers worldwide.
